“UNNS The Captivation” by SAPAN SAXENA
Book Cover:
The cover is designed by Ajitabha Bose. Two lovers are walking towards sea in rain holding an umbrella. This is very beautiful and reminded me of “Pyar hua Iqrar hua” of Raj Kapoor and Nargis.
Blurb:
"Of course you know about the seven stages of love, but have you ever lived them?"

Atharva Rathod and Meher Qasim.

Love birds since adolescence. Bonded by love, separated by circumstances. They part ways only to meet again. But this time, he is on a secret mission...

Are they in control of their own destiny, or it’s their destiny which is making them dance to its tunes? Only time would answer, as Atharva and Meher unwillingly and unknowingly transcend the seven stages of love.

A quintessential tale of love and romance marked beautifully by its own rustic old school charm.
Review:
The book is a love story of a Hindu boy and Muslim girl, Atharva and Mehar. They meet in school and feel attraction. Somehow they grow apart in the end of school days. Growing up Atharva joins Research and analysis wing (RAW). Mehar has a tragedy and settles in Germany. Atharva is sent on a secret mission there and their path cross again. Will they meet or again grow apart?
The story progresses at a leisurely pace. The chemistry between Atharva and Mehar is good. This is a love story at heart which has a thriller element of espionage.
I came to know a new thing form the book and that is 7 stages of love in Urdu. These are:
1. Hub means the stage of attraction.
2. Unns means the stage of infatuation.
3. Ishq is when people actually fall in love.
4. Aqeedat is stage of reverence.
5. Ibadat is worshipping of lover.
6. Junoon is the sixth stage of obsession for your lover.
7. The final stage is Maut which means death. There is nothing more auspicious for someone who loves a soul to die for him or her.
Sapan has shown all these 7 stages in three different stages of their meetings. The stages are represented by season. First is Basant which means spring. Second one is Herbst for which I have to look up dictionary. The middle German name Herbst means harvest and modern meaning is fall. Third stage is winter. These seasons represent the progress of their relation and these are further sub divided into Hub, Unns, Ishq, Aqeedat, Ibadat, Junoon and Maut. This is a very interesting way of naming chapters and at first I got confused. But by end everything became clear.
Positive points:
The story is interesting. English is very good and there are no grammatical mistakes (big plus for a new writer). You feel for the characters and that is important. The language is crisp and clear. I am impressed by paper and print quality. Typesetting is very good and pleasing to see. This is pleasing to read and easy on easy.
Negative points:
The story is bit predictable. The German portion looks inspired by Salman Khan- Katrina Kaif starrer “Ek Tha Tiger” (though I am not sure). Miyaaz Sheikh character looks a straight rip off of a character played by Roshan Seth in the movie. The book is too simplified at places and the writer tries to spoon feed the reader at places. This slows the pace down and makes it too descriptive and long at place. Some tight editing would have done a lot of good.
Recommendation and rating:
I would recommend it all my friends who like to read good romantic fiction. Though the story is a simple romance but the presentation (stages of love and seasons of life) is quiet new and unique. I give the book a 3.5/ 5 stars.
